Julius Biowsky (1867–1927): an architect as a photographer
Julius Biowsky worked as an architect at the Stadtbauamt Linz. As an amateur photographer, he traveled through Upper Austria between 1905 and 1913, documenting castles, sacred buildings, small monuments, and other historical structures. These photographs provide rare insights into the appearance of historical monuments at the beginning of the 20th century and into the living conditions of the people who used them. Over 300 photographs in the holdings of the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH testify to Biowsky's keen interest in historical buildings.
However, Biowsky as the photographer behind these images is hardly tangible. While his professional career is well documented, his personal circumstances and the motivation for his extensive photographic documentation work remain largely unknown.
