Postcards "Wiener Werkstätte"

The founding of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Fritz Waerndorfer aimed to renew art on the basis of solid craftsmanship. All areas of life were to be artistically permeated, and even the smallest everyday object was to be given the same aesthetic care as a painting or sculpture. The postcard as an object of everyday use was a natural choice. Thus, starting in 1907/1908, the Wiener Werkstätte also included the production of postcards in its program. Their exclusive design and relatively small print run also appealed to collectors of postcards and gave rise to a veritable passion for collecting, which continues unabated to this day.

Numerous renowned artists, including Josef Hoffmann, Berthold Löffler, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele, contributed their designs and artwork to this enterprise.

In 1912, the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum acquired over 300 of these valuable postcards, which were continuously added to. Today, 416 Wiener Werkstätte postcards are in the Graphic Arts Collection of the Province of Upper Austria.
